Why I Added Xero Certification and Why Creative Business Owners Should Take a Look
I’m excited to share that I’ve recently added Xero certification to the list of accounting software platforms I support.
As a bookkeeper, I’m often asked which accounting software is “the best.” My answer is usually the same: it depends on your business, your workflow, and whether you’ll actually use it consistently.
I’ve spent years working primarily with QuickBooks Online, and it’s an excellent platform for many small businesses. But after completing my Xero certification, I came away with a new appreciation for what it offers, especially for creative entrepreneurs.
A Different Experience
The first thing I noticed about Xero was its clean, modern interface. It feels approachable and less intimidating than many traditional accounting platforms. For visual artists, photographers, designers, illustrators, filmmakers, and other freelancers, that matters. Creative professionals often tell me they didn’t start their business because they love bookkeeping…they love creating. But staying on top of your finances is crucial so if by using an accounting software that’s simple and intuitive could be a win win!
Built for Busy Freelancers
Many creative businesses have unique workflows. You might invoice clients for milestone payments, collect deposits, manage project-based work, or juggle multiple income streams throughout the month. Having software that’s easy to navigate makes those tasks less of a burden.
While no accounting software eliminates the need for good bookkeeping practices, a platform that feels natural to use can make maintaining accurate financial records much easier.
The Software Isn’t the Solution
Software is just the tool though.
Whether you choose Xero or QuickBooks Online, you’ll still need:
A properly structured chart of accounts.
Consistent transaction categorization.
Regular bank reconciliations.
Accurate financial reports.
A process for keeping your books current.
Without those fundamentals, even the best software won’t give you reliable financial information.
Xero or QuickBooks Online?
The good news is that there isn’t a wrong answer. QuickBooks Online continues to be a fantastic solution for many growing businesses because of its extensive integrations, reporting capabilities, and widespread adoption. Xero, however, offers an experience that I think many creative professionals will genuinely enjoy using. Its design is clean, user-friendly, and approachable.
My Goal Hasn’t Changed
Adding Xero certification doesn’t change my philosophy. My goal has always been to help business owners understand their numbers so they can make confident decisions. Whether you’re using Xero, QuickBooks Online, or another platform entirely, clean books lead to better insights, better planning, and less stress.
At the end of the day, the best accounting software is the one that supports your business while making it easier to stay financially organized.
